My One Year Anniversary: A Look Back

October 2017 marked one year since I had weight loss surgery (October 3, 2016), and I’ve lost 100 lbs.  To say that it’s been a blessing would be an understatement.  An even bigger understatement would be saying that this journey has been extremely hard.

But I think I’ve talked enough on previous posts about the fact that this whole process has been difficult and the fact that I still have a long way to go…So looking back on the past year, I want to celebrate by thinking about all of the things I’m now able to do that I could not do before when I was well over 300 lbs:

  • I can finally do a backbend!  I know it sounds like a weird thing to be proud of, but I’ve practiced yoga on and off for several years and have always wanted to try that pose.
  • My labwork is finally within “normal” ranges – HDL/LDL cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood sugars, AST/ALT, etc.
  • I can fly comfortably on an airplane, without a seatbelt extender and without my hips intruding onto the seat next to mine. I can even cross my legs in my airplane seat!
  • I fit comfortably in the seating at concert venues.
  • I can climb Stone Mountain in the morning and be able to wear my high heels that evening, with no discomfort to my knees.
  • I can walk several miles without being out of breath or exhausted.
  • I no longer have to worry about sitting at a table versus a booth at restaurants.
  • I can now buy clothing at “regular” stores, even though right now since I’m still in transition, I buy alot of second-hand clothing off apps/websites like Swap and Poshmark (if you could kindly use “JAZZYGURL81” as your Poshmark referral code I’d really appreciate it!).
  • I find myself speaking up for myself more…crazy how going through this process can boost your confidence in other areas of your life.
  • I can run over a mile on the treadmill without stopping.
  • I can do a full hour on the stairmaster machine without stopping.
  • I can do a number of exercises that used to be too difficult for me to do at all, i.e.  pushups, situps, and burpees.
  • I have more energy and more stamina.

The list goes on and on…yes, there are some drawbacks to having bariatric surgery, but the rewards definitely outweigh any difficulties that I’ve experienced.  So for those still on the fence about bariatric surgery or any new post-ops that are having a hard time adjusting to life after surgery, I want to encourage you!

As someone who has been overweight since childhood and never thought they’d be successful at losing weight, I am telling you that YOU CAN DO IT!  It’s going to take alot of work and support from those around you (and if you don’t have any personal support, there are a number of online forums, Facebook groups, and bariatric support meetings in your local area that you can join for free – and please also consider going to see a counselor).
